About our winners:

First place winner: Sabrine Mengerink

I am Sabrine  Iman Mengerink. I am 10 years old. I go to The Oasis school.  I am in the fourth grade. My favorite subject is California history. I love bike ridding, hiking, and reading comic books. When I grow up, I want to be a farmer and hope to run my grandpa's  farm.

I was very surprised that I won.

                            - Sabrine Menegerink, Age 10

Third place winner: Maryam Idris

I am Maryam Idris. I am 8 years old. I am in the third grade in Granada Islamic school. My hobbies include reading, drawing, sewing and knitting. I've been winning drawing competition since I was in kindergarden. Al-hamdullilah I won this one too. I drew the picture of the sun, and its rays, I wrote Light a life in different languages, because I thought that the sun was the main thing that produces light.  I wrote Light a life in different languages because the sun spreads its rays all over the world.

Donation from GIS Islamic School

Muslim Community Center, Santa Clara, 2005.

Children reaching out to children - an amazing gesture of love.

GiveLight Foundation's very first big donation was received in the form of a generous sum of $11,000. And amazingly this came from the little kids of Granada Islamic School (granadaschool.org). That's a lot of money! Our team would like to thank every kid out there from the bottom of our hearts. A box, as heavy as a treasure box, loaded with lots of love and care was presented to Dian on the GIS International Day event. Dian was so overwhelmed that she could not hold back her tears when she thanked the kids. Many kids and parents in the audience shared a tear or two as well :) It was one of the most beautiful moments and is captured on these pictures for all to see.

Thanks for all your love.

Construction Commencement Ceremony

Takengon, Indonesia, May 2005

With strong presence from the local mayor/governor, religious and political officials, a small ceremony was organized to mark the official start of the construction phase. Our children attended the event and some of them can hardly wait for the building to complete. Compared to a US style ground breaking event, this is equivalent but it is marked by laying the stones that make up the foundation. The Mayor, Fiqh leader, one child and GiveLight Vice President poured concrete on five stones that would form the foundation for four of the building columns.
